Hello all, I hope you are are having a fantastic March!
I have been experimenting with black and white photography more than I ever have, and if you follow me on any of the social media platforms you will have probably noticed that trend! I love this kind of photography because it feels so much more emotional to me, so much more in touch with the human side of the image. That probably sounds cheesy, but hey, that's kind of who I am I suppose.
But why? Because it makes me uncomfortable. What I mean by that is this: I have almost always shot color. I felt like I was in a rut with my work recently and I knew that I had to do something to shake things up a bit. Enter black and white! I have always liked black and white photography, but never shot it personally because I assumed that color was adding things to my photography. So it makes me uncomfortable because I am not used to shooting this way at all, and is presenting itself with a bit of a learning curve for me.
I also want to say that I have been posting quite a bit on my Instagram (check it out by clicking here) recently and is my primary social media site at this point. So head on over and click that "Follow" button!
With all of that said, I am now exclusively shooting black and white and I can already tell that it is helping me improve my photography. It is helping me focus on composition, and drawing out raw emotion in my images, rather than simply capturing what was there. It's so much fun too!

"Live the Life You've Imagined" Photo of the Day: March 20, 2016
"Go confidently in the directions of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined." - Henry David Thoreau.
That is one of my favorite quotes, and for one reason or another this photo always reminds me of it. Maybe its the gorgeous seaside landscape or the two people atop the cliff. Whatever it may be, it always serves as a reminder for me to pursue my dreams.

"The Pavilion" Photo of the Day: February 17, 2016
"The Pavilion." I shot this pavilion on Raspberry Island, an island in the center of the Mississippi River near downtown St. Paul, Minnesota. A bit chilly out but it was worth it!

"Riverside" Photo of the Day: February 10, 2016
"Riverside." Thanks to my buddy Timmy for allowing me to randomly snap photos of him during a recent hike along the icy shores of the Mississippi River. My addiction to black and white continues to grow stronger...

Black and White or Color? You be the judge! "Cape Tribulation Shoreline" Photo of the Day: January 4, 2016
I need some help! This is a photography that was taken this past summer and I would like some feedback on which version of it you like better - the color or black and white. I personally like both yet I believe that they convey different emotions. What are your thoughts? Comment and let me know! -Wyatt
I shot this while hiking along the beach near Cape Tribulation in the tropics of Australia. With the rainforest to my back and the Pacific ocean ahead, which holds the phenomenal Great Barrier Reef, the number of ecosystems in this one area of the globe is mind boggling.

"Alyssa" Photo of the Day: December 30, 2015
Moments of love and beauty make life worth living. Unfortunately, moments pass. However, if you are lucky you may find someone who breaks this rule. With them, these wonderful moments always seem to exist.

Photo of the Day: July 25, 2015 "The Little Free Library"
Sometimes photography is about finding the little wonders rather than shooting the obvious subjects or compositions. In a small southern Minnesota city I came across this homemade "little free library". I decided to shoot it in black and white to add to the feeling that I was trying to evoke from this interactive sculpture.

Photo of the Day: July 15, 2015 "The Door"
Hi everyone, I shot this photo tonight as I explored the World War 1 memorial here in Kansas City. The monument seems even more powerful at night as lights embedded into the ground illuminate the tower. Almost all photographs that I have seen of this monument focus on the structure's verticality, so with this photo I took the different approach of focusing on the lights and this staff door while leaving the height of the structure to the imagination.

Photo of the Day: July 3, 2015
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri illuminates beautifully at night. This past spring I chose to do a study where I shot it in black and white to add to the contrast between the dark sky and the glowing facade of the architectural forms. What do you think of one of the results? #photooftheday #blackandwhite #architecture #photography#night

Photo of the Day: June 21, 2015
Marina City, Chicago. The two 587 foot, 65 story towers were the tallest residential buildings in the world when completed in 1964. Now they are beloved and remain as some of the most uniquely shaped buildings ever constructed. This was shot during a boat tower though Chicago's "skyscraper canyon" this past summer. Corncobs anyone?

Small Town Exploration in Black and White
Hi everyone, I did not want text to distract you as you looked through these photographs, so here it is at the end of the post. I took these while walking through a small town in Southern Minnesota. I absolutely love shooting in black and white but rarely publish them for all of you to see (just a coincidence, it is not intentional I promise!). I personally love the honesty of small communities and the value of relationships that are formed within a small town. It is truly a beautiful thing and I hope that I captured it here.

Captured Moments
When I was young, it was a family tradition for my parents to take my sisters and I to the famous Stone Arch Bridge in downtown Minneapolis to watch the "Red, White, and Boom" fireworks light up the sky each fourth of July night. I remember sitting in my little lawn chair being absolutely overwhelmed by the sights that surrounded me; the colorful fireworks, the beautiful skyline shining like the Emerald City in Oz, all the while everything being mirrored onto the mighty Mississippi river below. This swarm of color, light, and reflections was astonishing, wonderful, and perfect. I remember never wanting to forget what I was seeing. I wanted to remember.
Our world is beautiful, and ever since I was a young boy I have felt an urgent pull to capture beautiful moments in time; to rescue them from the oblivion of forgotten memories. To save them forever so that they could be enjoyed by many.
Enter photography. Photography allows for us to freeze moments in time and share them with others; to allow other to take part in our memories. That is an absolutely beautiful thing to me! That is the purpose of this blog, for me to share moments which I have captured with you. Thank you for coming on this journey with me! -Wyatt
